Missouri Compromise
A negotiation that allowed Maine to be added to the Union as a free state and Missouri as a slave state in 1821. The compromise establishes a 36 degree, 30' parallel of latitude dividing line between free and slave areas of territories which is why i used this picture. -
Tariff of Abominations
1828 Congress rose tariffs with the Tariff of Abominations. The tariffs are designed too support the American industry and were successful and benefiting the northern industrial economy but unfortunately the tariffs were damaging the southern agricultural economy.

Nate Turners Rebellion
Nat Turner was a slave who encouraged an uprising that spread through many plantations in Southern Virginia. Turner and about 70 other people killed about 60 white people. 55 slaves including Turner were executed, and nearly 200 were lynched by mobs.

The Compromise of 1850

Kansas-Nebraska Act
An act passed by Congress that overturns the Missouri Compromise opening the Northern Territory to Slavery. Both sides began to send settlers into the area so that they could influence the future of the areas. http://www.ushistory.org/us/31a.asp -
Abraham Lincoln's Election
Lincoln was elected president by a large amount despite not being included in many of the southern ballets, and as republican his party Anti-s;avery outlook put fear in the eyes of many southerners. About a month after polls closed, South Carolina seceded from the union. Six states followed by the spring go 1861.
