The Battle of Shiloh
This battle was fought in Hardin County, Tennessee,it started on 4/6/1862 and ended on 4/7/1862.The Civil War's Battle of Shiloh ended with a United States (Union) victory, who were led by Ulysses S. Grant and Don Carlos Buell over Confederate forces, who were led by Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard. The attack was for the Union troops to penetrate the Confederate interior.This resulted with the human toll being the greatest of any war on the American continent up to that date. -
Second Battle of Bull Run
This battle was fought in Manassas, Virginia, it started on 8/28/1862 and ended on 8/30/1862.Despite being outmatch the Confederate army won, they were led by Robert E. Lee,they had 20,000 troops while the Union led by Irvin McDowell and John pope had 35,000 troops.Lee was a big reason for the victory,he had managed a strategic offensive against an enemy almost twice of his own.The Federals had to retreat back to Washington, allowing Lee to lead his army across the Potomac River into the North. -
The Battle of Antietam
This battle was fought in Sharpsburg, Maryland, it started and ended on 9/17/1862. The Battle of Antietam was a Union victory led by George B. McClellan. The Union lost approximately 12,400 men to the Confederate's 10,700 there were led by Robert E. Lee, but the Union had driven the Confederates from the field and ended the Confederate invasion.The win gave President Abraham Lincoln the confidence to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation at a moment of strength rather than desperation. -
The Battle of Fredericksburg
This battle was fought in Fredericksburg,Virginia, it started on 12/11/1862 and ended on 12/15/1862.In the battle Confederate soldiers led by Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. Jackson were strategically placed behind a stone wall along the Sunken Road. The battle resulted in significant casualties for the Union Army led by Ambrose Burnside and George G. Meade.The entire Battle of Fredericksburg resulted in 12,653 Union casualties and 4,201 Confederate casualties.The unions goal was to get to Richmond. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
This battle was fought in Chancellorsville, Virginia, it started on 4/30/1863 and ended on 5/6/1863. The Battle of Chancellorsville was a huge victory for the Confederacy led by Robert E. Lee during the Civil War,This battle is famous for being the battle in which Confederate General Thomas Stonewall Jackson was mortally wounded.The Southern victory ruined the Union plains to invade Richmond. But Jackson's death was difficult for the south because he was a major part in the planning of the war. -
Battle of Gettysburg
This battle was fought in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, it started on 7/1/1863 and ended on 7/3/1863. This battle was the bloodiest battle in the U.S. history for its time, with an estimated 25,000 Confederate soldiers dead and More than 20,000 Federals dead. It resulted in a Union victory. This battle ended Robert Lee's quest to invade the North and bring the Civil War to a swift end. The loss there killed the hopes of the Confederate States of America to become an independent nation. -
Battle of Chickamauga
This battle was fought in Catoosa County, Georgia, it started on 9/18/1863 and ended on 9/20/1863. The Confederate army led by Braxton Bragg, they secured a decisive victory at Chickamauga but lost 20 percent of its forces in battle. After two days of fierce fighting,The confederate soldiers broke through the Union lines led by William Rosecrans,and they forced them to give up Chattanooga. Although it was a tactical victory,Chickamauga failed to have any long term advantages to the Confederates. -
Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse
This battle was fought in Spotsylvania Count, Virginia it started on 5/8/1864 and ended on 5/21/1864. The battle is still undecided, and both sides declare victory, with the Confederacy because they were able to hold their defenses and the Union because they inflicted severe losses on Lee's army. Ulysses S. Grant's main goal in this battle was to keep Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia occupied while Union General William Sherman led his own attack into Georgia.
