Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was an enslaved African American bought by a doctor. Dred claimed he should be free for living in a free state. The court ruled over him saying a slave couldn't lawsuit. The court decided that Dred Scott is still a slave. The impact was many white southerners believed that nothing could stop slavery. -

Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th president of the U.S. Lincoln was the first Republican president. -
South Carolina Secedes
South Carolina seceded from the Union because they did not want Abraham Lincoln for president. Soon after South Carolina seceded, other confederate states followed. They thought that if they decided to join the Union, they should be able to secede from the Union. -
Battle at Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was low on supplies. Lincoln sent unarmed troops to the fort to deliver supplies. On April 14th, 1861, confederates attacked the fort before the supplies could arrive. -
Battle of Bull Run
At the Battle of Bull Run, both sides expected a quick and easy victory. However the war lasted over 4 years. The battle had to parts. The first time the North retreated, but returned with reinforcements. The North ended up losing the first battle of the Civil War. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. He ended up issuing it a second time. He only wanted to use it on Confederates but only had the time to use it on the southern rebel states. -

Lincoln's Assasination
In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theater. John Wilkes snuck in and shot Lincoln in the head.
