William Lloyd Garrison, an anti-slavery supporter, created the Liberator. He wanted an immediate end to slavery. -
Compromise of 1850-Passed
Henry Clay suggested a compromise. Slavery would be illegal in Washington D.C. California would be a free state, and other territories would be able to decide if they wanted slavery or not. They also passed a new Fugitive Slave Act, which if you helped a slave you could go to prison or be fined. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin-Published
The book changed the view people had on slavery. It was created by Harriet Beecher Stowe, but used Tom's experience. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act-Passed
Stephen A. Douglas proposed a bill called "popular sovereignty." This would help settle the issue of slavery in the Kansas and Nebraska Territories. It also repealed the Missouri Compromise. The South supported the bill, while the North protested. -
James Buchanan Sworn into Office as the 15th President
James Buchanan defeated Republican, John C. Fremont in the election. Buchanan won all of the Southern States except Maryland. He also got 174 electoral votes. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a enslaved African American, his owner lived in Missouri, a slave state, then moved to Illinois. Since, slavery was illegal there Scott sued for his freedom. Eventually, the case reached the Supreme Court. They said that living on free soil does not make you free. They also said that a slave was property, and according to the Fifth Amendment you couldn't take property without "due process." -
John Brown's Raid at Harper's Ferry
John Brown wanted to take weapons from a federal storage site to give to enslaved African Americans. Then start an uprising against slaveholders. They failed and Brown received a death sentence. -
Abe Lincoln Elected President
Abe Lincoln was elected the 16th president of the United States. Lincoln was the first Republican to be elected. His party wanted to ban slavery in the new territories. -
South Carolina Secedes from the Union
South Carolina was the first state to secede. They didn't trust the Republicans to protect their rights. Many states seceded after South Carolina seceded. -
Battle at Fort Sumter Begins
Abraham Lincoln got a message from Fort Sumter that said that the fort was low on supplies and the Confederates demanded a surrender. The Confederates attacked the American troops bringing the supplies. Then, Fort Sumter surrendered. The Battle ended April 14, and after this, the Civil War started. -
1st Battle of Bull Run
The Union tried to attack the Confederacy, but the Confederacy troops got help from another troop. The North had many attacks on the South, but in the end the South won. The Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle of the Civil War. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Lincoln. It said that slaves within the rebellion states should be set free. Many slaves did not get set free right away. This also allowed colored people to fight in the Civil War. -
Battle of Gettysburg-Begins
The Confederates was going into Gettysburg to get supplies, but then they met the Union. After many days of fighting, the Union won. Both sides lost a lot of people in the fight. The battle ended July 3, 1863. -
Shermans March into the Sea-Begins
The Confederates were still fighting even though they weren't dong so well, but the Union still was fighting. Sherman burned many cities on his way to the Atlantic Ocean. Sherman went onto join Grant's forces to capture Richmond. The battle ended December 21, 1864. -
The Surrender at Appomattox Court House
The Union wrote a letter the Confederates asking them to surrender, but they insisted on keep fighting. The Union took the Confederates food so they would starve. Both troops met at Appomattox Court House, the Confederate general surrendered. -
Lincoln's Assassination
President Lincoln was at a Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. watching a play. John Wilkes Booth was Lincoln's killer. The death of Lincoln shocked many people.
