the decision was to free him or keep him as a slave. back then a black person could not go into court. they couldn't be a citizen in the U.S either. -
John Brown's Raid at Harpers Ferry
John Brown led a raid targeting a federal arsenal, a storage site for weapons, to try and arm slaves. He was caught and ended up being killed. Some people thought he died for a cause and some thought he was too violent and deserved to be killed. -
Lincoln Elected 16th President
Abe Lincoln was elected in 1860 as a Republican. His stand on slavery was to ban it in the new territories. He was in office until 1865 before his assassination. He was running for Presidency against John Bell, John C. Brekenridge, and Stephen A. Douglas. -
South Carolina Secedes from the UNion
South Carolina became the first slave stain the South to declare that it had seceded from the United States. The Southerners used States' Rights to justify secession. That means they chose to join the Union, broke the contract by not supporting the fugitive slave act so the slaves had the right to secede. -
Battle at Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter was a US fort. The Governor of South Carolina was threatening to take over. Lincoln responded to Governor Francis Pickens that he was sending an unarmed group to the fort with supplies. 4 -

This battle took place in northern Virginia by a small river named Bull Run. It was the first major battle of the Civil War and over 30,000 troops were commanded to attack a confederate force. the first time the Yankees pushed the confederates back and they thought they had it all but then the rebels rallied. the northerners now realized that the war would be not only long but difficult. -

About 40,000 troops headed south toward Corinth, Mississippi.
the leaders chose to strike before any more troops arrived to reinforce the union. it was morning on April, 6 two generals led a surprise attack. This battle lasted only two days and both sides had more than 23,000 people wounded or killed. -

Two sides met at a place called Antietam near Maryland. This battle was one of the deadliest battles of them all. About 6,000 soldiers died in this war, and about 17,000 were wounded or injured. -

this battle involved nearly 200,000 troops. this was the largest amount of people in any fought battle.this battle was fought near the Rappahannock river. -

this was a presidential proclamation and an executive order written by the president of the united states Abraham Lincoln. this proclamation gave the freedom of all slaves in ten states. It was issued as a war in the civil war. -
South Surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse
The Battle of Appomattox Court House was one of the last battles of the American Civil War. Confederate General Robert surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia. Resulting Battle of Appomattox Court House brought the four-year Civil War to an end.
