Dred Scott decision
Dred Scott was an enslaved male that lived in a free territory. He attempted to sue for freedom because he lived in the free territory. It was stated that because he was not a citizen, he could not bring the case to the Supreme Court. The court case was over ruled. Republicans and anti-slavery groups were upset. -
John Brown's Raid at Harpers Ferry
John Brown targeted a federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. He hoped to start a revolt against slave owners. It was not a success and Brown served a death sentence. -
South Carolina Seceded from the Union
South Carolina was the first of 7 states to succeed from the union by February, 1861. These states wanted to start their own country and call in the Confedarate States of America. The elected Jefferson Davis as president. -
Abraham Lincoln elected 16th President
Abraham Lincoln was from the Republican Party and became our nations 16th president. He planned to keep slavery where it existed but ban it in the territories. -
Battle at Fort Sumter Begins
The Battle at Fort Sumter was the start of the Civil War. The Union claimed the fort when South Carolina seceded from the Union. After the battle ended, the fort remained under Confederate control. -
