Attack On Fort Sumter
The attack on Fort Sumter, Charleston, SC was from April 12-14, 1861. On April 12 the Confederacy opened fire and after 34 hours the troops finally surrendered with their fort on fire. This attack marked the beginning of the Civil War. -
The South Secedes
After the attack on Fort Sumter, states from the south began to secede. Licoln requested troops to control the South and declared that there was a rebellion. 11 states total seceded from the Union. -
The Border States
There were 4 border states: Delaware, Kentucky, Missuori, and Maryland. These 4 slave states were nuetral during the war. But after the south invaded Kentucky, they favored the Union still staying a border state. Delaware also favored the Union. Maryland and Missouri favored the Confederacy. -
Battle of Fredericksburg
The Battle of Fredericksburg took place from December 11 to December 13th. General Burnside marched toward Richmond with his trops.Burnside ran his men directly into the Confederates gunfire. The Union lost 13,00 men and the Confederate lost only 5,000. General Burnside was then replaced by General Hooker.

Emancipation Proclamation
Licoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. It freed the slaves in areas of war. It did not free those in the border states. -
Battle of Vicksburg
The battle of Vicksburg began on May 18 and lasted until July 4th. On July 4, Vicksburg surrendered after prolonged siege operations. Pemberton lost majority of his army and the confederacy was effectively split in half. Grants reputation was boosted with his success. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Lee's charge at the battle of Gettysburg was repulsed by the Union's fire. At great losses to the Confederate army, Lee led his army to a retreat back to Virginia. As many as 51,000 soldiers from both armies were killed, wounded, captured or missing in the three-day battle. -
Gettysburg Address
Citation Abraham Licoln wrote the Gettysburg Address in dedication to the soldiers who faught in the battle at Gettysburg. -
Lee Surrenders to Grant
General Lee, from the confederacy, surrendered to General Grant, from the Union. After the Union began to seige several of the South's states they began losing many men, supplies, etc. The South finally gave in the Union and the war ended. -
The Civil War Ends
After the rebellion in Virginia ended the South surrendered due to the lack of many men dead and supplies running out. Licoln welcomed them back in the Union with no consequences for there actions of going against them. Licoln's words were "with malice toward none, [and] charity for all;... let us strive together... to bind up the nation's wounds."
