The South Secedes
When Abraham Lincoln, was elected president, the South Carolina legislature created a threat. South Carolina from the union known as the United States of America. The depart of South Carolina was followed by the depart of six more states Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas . -
Shots fired on Fort Sumter
Confederate leaders decided to capture the fort while it was still cut off from supplies. On April 12 , they opened fire. After 34 hours with the fort on fire the trops inside finally surrendered. This attack marked the beginning of American Civil War .( Summary 10.4 ) -
McClellan Loses Command
On March 8, President Lincoln angry with General McClellan's decisions issued an order reorganizing the Army of Virginia and releasing McClellan of supreme command. McClellan was given command of the Army of the Potomac, and was told to attack Richmond. This made the beginning of the Peninsular Campaign. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
General McClellan, paired with General Lee's escape, and continued invading by Confederate , did not please many people in the North. On November 7, Lincoln replaced McClellan with General Ambrose E. Burnside. Burnside's forces were defeated in a series of attacks against Confederate at Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Burnside was replaced with General Joseph Hooker. -
Emancipation Proclamation
On January 1, 1863 , Lincoln published the Emancipation Proclamation which freed all slaves in the Confederate area. The proclmation had a great impact on the public , however it did not free all slaves. Abolitionist were shocked at this event . They were upset that Lincoln did not free all enslaved people in bordered states. ( Chapter 17 pg 504 ) -
The Draft Laws
The North and the South were desperately in need of soilders. Both sides passed laws of conscription and also known as the draft .Men were required to serve in the military . The Confederates started drafting soilders in the spring of 1862 ; however planters who owned 20 or more slaves did not have to join the service. Also , wealthy men could hire other men to take their place . The union draft law was passed in March 1863 . ( Chapter 17 pg 508 ) -
Battle of Gettysburg
In June 1863 , the confederates crossed into southern Pennsylvania. On July 1, the Confederates ran into Union troops. The Battle of Gettysburg began. The fight lasted for three days on rocky hills and fields around Gettysburg.July 3 , 1863 , General Lee ordered to mount a direct attack in the middle of union lines. This was a deadly mistake. ( Chapter 17 pg 513 ) -
Battle of Vicksburg
July 4 , 1863 in Mississippi , General Grant had defeated Confederate troops at Vicksburg. The year before , Grant won many battleships in the South. Grant had begun his attack on Vicksburg in May 1863. When he lost he settled for a seige. Grant's troops trapped the city and prevented food and supplies. After a month the Confederates surrendered. ( Chapter 17 , pg 516 ) -
Gettysburg Address
On Novemeber 19, 1863 Licoln spoke in a cemetery in Gettysburg for 3,500 soliders were buried there. The people were impressed and called himself a flat failure.This address was one of the greatest speeches of all time . Lincoln stated That all man were created equally . ( Chapter 17, pg 513 ) -
Lee Surrenders to Grant
From Richmond and Petersburg General Lee fled west . General Lee wanted to continue fighting, but he knew he would lose. He told General Grant he was ready to surrender. On April 9 , 1865 both generals met at Appomattox Court House to arrange the surrender. ( Chapter 17 pg 519 )
