White Primary is abolished in GA
Georgia and many other southern states passed a lot of Jim Crow laws to limit what black citizens could do. The white primary limited black peoples access to primary elections by not allowing people of color to vote. In 1946, the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court ruled that this was illegal and ended it. 1948 Integration of the Armed Forces
On July 26, 1948, president Truman signed an executive order creating the President's Committee on Equality of Treatment and Opportunity in the Armed Forces. Brown v Board of Education
In Topeka, there was a law suit against the Board of Education by Oliver Brown.He and many other parents tried to send their black kids to white schools. But, the school district was so segregated that they were not allowed to have lawyers from the NAACP. Montgomery Bus Boycott
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the public bus in Montgomery Alabama to a passenger that was white. She was arrested but her protest gave other people courage to boycott. Change to Georgia's state flag
Governor Marvin Griffin signed legislation in 1956 to change the Georgia flag. The change would include the confederate battle emblem. Sibley Commission
The General Assembly decided to stop funds for any school system that integrated its schools. Governor Vandiver had to either close public schools or get help desegregating schools from the federal government. Albany Movement
The Albany Movement is one of the first mass civil rights movements in the modern era, its goal was to desegregate an entire town. The movement included many protests and led to over 1,000 African Americans being jailed in Albany and surrounding counties. These movements were led by the NAACP and its local branch founder C.W. Six hundred people marched in Selma, the march was led by John Lewis and the SNCC and SCLC activist. their marched was stopped by state troopers and local police who ordered them to turn around, When they refused, the officers shot teargas into the crowd. About 250,000 people, both black and white, marched peacefully in Washington D.C. There was a lot of media coverage and so, President Kennedy eventually supported the marches during the march Marin Luther king Jr. gave his famous '' I Have a Dream'' Speech. Civil Rights Act 1964 passed
The Civil Rights Acts made racial discrimination in any public places illegal. It also forced employers to provide equal employment opportunities to black people.
