1946 Governor's Race/End of White Primary
The 1946 Governor's Race was when Melvin Thomas, Herman Talmadge and Ellis Arnall were all in office at the same time. This is because Eugene Talmadge died before he could be sworn into office. According to the Georgia Constitution, Lieutenant Governor Melvin Thomson was supposed to take over. Because of this previous Governor Ellis Arnall refused to leave office. Herman Talmadge was sugested to be governor. In the end Herman Talmadge won in the election of 1947. -
Benjamin Mays
Benjamin Mays was a minister, educator, scholar, social activist, and the president of Morehouse college in Atlanta from 1940 to 1967. He was also a friend of Martin Luther King jr. and was one of the most expressive, well-spoken critics of segregation before the rise of Civil Rights. -
Hamilton Holmes and Charlayne Hunter to UGA
Hamilton Holmes and Charalayne Hunter were both African Americans who were planning on going to college but when they applied for UGA they were declined just because of thier race. NAACP did not agree with this decision and fought for Hunter and Holmes in court. The case won and they both got to go to UGA. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
Brown vs.Board of education is known for helping end segregation between schools. It all started when Linda Brown, a 3rd grade African American had a very long walk to school through a railroad switchyard while there was a white school only 7 blocks away. Oliver Brown (Lindas Father) and 12 other black parents in trying to get there children into the white school. Supported by the NAACP this Supreme Court Case won and made blacks and whites able to go to school together and equally. -
1956 Georgia State flag
Georgia changed thier [state flag in 1956](www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/government-politics/state-flags-georgia) state flag in 1956</a> .The new flag had a confederate battle on it because it showed how Georgia didn't like the Civil Rights movement and like the old way of doing things. Some people were very ofended and this flag was changed in 2001. -
Herman Talmage
Herman Talmage (son of Eugene Talmage) served as Govenor of Georgia. He was part of the three Governors Contreversy and beat out former govenor Ellis Arnall and Lt. governor Melvin E. Thompson He also served in the senate for many years. As Governor he restuctured the state highway department, created the Georgia Forestry Commision, and provided leadership for various improvements. He also had a big impact on Georgia's education. -
SNCC
Student Nonviolent Cordinating Comitee (SNCC) was one of the organiztions during the Civil Rights Movement. Members of the SNCC played a role in sit-ins and freedom rides. They participated in the march on washington and helped African Americans get there voting rights. -
Sibley Commision
In 1960, the Sibley Commision was made to help Govenor Ernst Vandive Jr. if he should close all schools in Georgia or if he should desegregate them. Members of the Commision team went around Georgia and asked people how they felt about it. Ernst Vandive accepted the Commisions results which pretty much all said they wanted to keep the public schools open. -
The Albany Movement
The Albany Movement was an campaign attempt to try to eliminate segregation. In 1961 residents of Albany, Georgia joined together. They held large meetings and many people got arrested. March on Washington
The March on Washington was a monumental event in history. It was a rally held in Washington DC and held around 250,000 people. Martin Luther King gave one of the most famous speeches of all time, his I have a Dream Speech. After the rally the Civil Rights Act of 1954 and the National Voting Rights Act of 1965 were passed. -
Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a huge part of the Civil Rights Movement. He was born in Atlanta. He e really wanted blacks to be treated equal to whites. He gave many speeches and held non-violent rallies, sit-ins and boycotts. His most famous speech was his I have a dream speech in 1963. He was then assasainated on March 11,1969. -
The Civil Rights Act
The Civil Rights Act was the law that basically brought everything together. The Civil rights act made it illigal to discriminate against someone based on thier race or gender. It ended segregation in schools and work places. -
Lester Maddox
Lester Maddox was a segregationalist. He served 2 terms as govenor of Georgia. He served during the Civil Rights Movement. -
Maynard Jackson as mayor of Atlanta
Maynard Jackson was the first African American mayor of Atlanta. He was a democrat and served theree terms. He helped improve ratial relations and also helped decrease the amoumt of crime in Atlanta. He also helped with many public works projects includint the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport which was named in his honor after he died in 2003. -
Andrew Young
Andrew Young served as Mayor of Atlanta from 1982-1990. He also served many other high positions in Georgia. As mayor he expanded some of Maynard Jackson's programs, helped renovate ZooAtlanta, and much more.
