  • White Primary abolished in GA

    White Primary abolished in GA
    After the Reconstruction the GOP lost support and the DNC took control. To keep control of Georgia, Demorcats decided to disallow blacks to vote in their primaries. Primus King wanted to vote in a DNC primary in 1944 but he was kicked out. King got a lawyer and made his legal case and eventually, his case went to the Supreme Court and won in 1946. After that the "White Primary" went the way of the Dodo bird.

    Integration of the Armed Forces
    President Harry Truman Signed the exectutive order to Desegregate the Armed Forces in all branches. All the events happend because the Marines decided to cut all their colored units even though the Navy said that they should have 3,000 troops.     Brown vs Board of Education
    In 1950 Oliver Brown asked his daughter's school if she can be to a all white school but was denied.
    Brown and other parents decided to sue the Topeka School System and when it was presented to the state they lost. Four years later the Superme Court got the case; and after a lengthy debate Brown's case won. The 1954 ruling overturned the original ruling of 1888 stating that it okay to have segregated facilities.

    Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
    In Decemeber 1 Rosa Parks was heading home after a long day's work she sat down on a Montgomery bus. But, before she could get really comfortable a white man told her to get out of that seat she said no and she was sent to jail. When she got here chance to call someone she called the President of the local NAACP. After that call he organized a boycott. After months of protest the city allowed everyone to sit anywhere on their buses.

    In 1956 a group of lawmakers wanted the state flag to change because of the upcomming centennial mark for the Civil War the bill to change the flag passed the General Assembly but the flag was highly controversial and it was in till 2001 that the flag was changed.

    Crisis at Central High and the "Little Rock Nine"
    In 1957 Arkansas made a program to intergrate all the schools so they started with Central High School. 9 black students tranfered from two high schools, so when they tried the enter but the governor of Ark. sent the Ark. National Guard to stop the students from entering. Eventually the situation got so bad that the Pres sent the 101st to protect the 9 from being attacked. It worked a year later the first black student graduated from Central.

    Temple Bombing in Atlanta
    In October 12, 1958 a Atlanta temple was blown up by people that opposed the civil rights movement. This event was considered a turning point in the civil rights movement because the people of ATL united and rebuilt the the damaged part of the temple. Many people believe that the reason why it was bombed it was because the Rabbi was a strong supporter of the civil rights movement.

    The Sibley Commission was established in 1960 to recommend school systems to decide to integrate and follow federal law. Because of this, many Private Schools sprang up from in many white communities to prevent integration.

  • UGA is integrated

    UGA is integrated
    For the first time ever two black students were admitted to UGA after a judge ordered the school to allow blacks. After the students entered the school Georgia threatend UGA to cut off funding for race mixing, therefore the school would have to close. Even though there was opposition to the race mixing UGA was eventually allowed to keep the two students to stay there.

  • Albany Movement

    Albany Movement
    People from the NAACP decided to test the new Supreme Court ruling that segregation in interstate buses are illegal. Many blacks sat on white only seats and were in trouble because the cops arrested them for not following Albany law. Eventually the city of Albany made a biracial committee to observe promblems in the city.

  • Freedom Rides

    Freedom Rides
    Two buses went down to the south to challenge the ruliling of the Supreme Court that segregation in buses were illegal. After a few days in the South KKK members started attacking the buses injuring many people. Most of the people in the buses went to New Orleans to head back home while others stayed. Overall the protest was bad for the people but highlighted the bad the KKK and the cops did to people.

    Birmingham Protests
    In the climax of the civil rights movement blacks started protesting in Birmingham when suddenly police start beating and firing water cannons at them. Many of the protesters were teens fighting for equality and with TV and cameras it showed the brutality of the Segregationists.

    March on Washington
    The march on D.C was a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement were MLK and a quarter of a million people march down from Washington Monument to the Lincoln Memorial. The march was very peaceful and there was no police interaction with protesters. That march is most remembered when MLK delivered his most famous speech "I have a dream" to a really big crowd of people in front of Lincoln Memorial.

  • 16th Baptist Church in Birmingham Bombed

    16th Baptist Church in Birmingham Bombed
    In 1963 a white man from the KKK put a bomb under the church and 20 mins later the bomb exploded killing 4 young girls and injuring 26 others. This event made the federal gov't back the movement before more lives were lost or injured.

  • JKF Assassinated

    JKF Assassinated
    JFK was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in November 22nd in 1963 when JFK was visiting Dallas. Many people still do not know (and probably will never know) why he killed him, mainly because he was shot and killed by Jack Ruby. LBJ later passed the civil rights act in JFK's honor.

    One year after JFK's assassination the Civil Rights Act was passed in July 2nd 1964. Therefore, no person whether black, white, yellow, brown or any other race should not be discriminated or unfairly treated in any way shape or form.

  • Voting Rights Act Passed

    Voting Rights Act Passed
    In 1965 the voting rights act was signed and passed after reports of murder and violence in the South between voting rights activists and the KKK. The act made it illegal to do voting taxes, literacy test or anyother type of restriction of voting.

  • Summerhill (Atlanta) Race Riot

    Summerhill (Atlanta) Race Riot
    SNCC leader Stokley Carmichael started a riot with thousands of angry black people after a black man is kill by a white cop. The riots injure 138 people and imprison thousands. Day later a chairman of the SNCC resigns.

  • MLK Assassinated

    MLK Assassinated
    MLK was shot and killed by James Earl Ray. He was on the balcony of a Memphis Hotel when he was shot. Many people were saddend by his untimely death. Ray was caught and sentenced to 99 years in prison. He later died in 1998.

    All GA schools integrated
    In 1971 GA full integrated public schools. Although there was resistence from both KKK and radical black millitia groups GA was finally united with both blacks and white living, breathing and learning together.
