Brown v. Board of Education of Topkea
The Supreme Court ruled that school segregation is unconstitutional, and overruled the Plessy v. Freguson case. The same case that established the "sperate but equal" principle. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Blacks boycott Montgomery bus system for 13 months. The boycott occurred due to Rosa Parks being arrested for resfusing to give her seat to a white man. -
Martin Luther King Jr
Martin Luther King Jr became a leader of the Civil Rights Movement after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man. MLK used civil disobedience and nonviolent protests to bring about change. -
Little Rock Nine
President Eisenhower sends the National Guard Little Rock's Central High School to protect nine black students as they desegregate the school. -
Sit-in Campains
Students all across the United States staged sit-in's to protest the segragation in resturants. Many restaurants and businessess ended segregation -
Freedom Rides
Young blacks and whites traveled on buses throughout the South form bus depot to another to force integration. -
March on Washington
Around 200,000 people marched into Washington where Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous "I Have A Dream" speech. -
Assassination of JFK
John F. Kennedy, a supporter of the Civil Rights Movement was killed during a parade in Dallas, Texas. -
The Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act as created to enforce the right to vote and makes ilegal any employment based on race and color. This act also outlaws segregation. -
Malcolm X
Malcolm X was a black nationalist and a member of the Black Muslims. He believed that blacks should separate form white society and build their own businesses. He then believed later in life that blacks should work for white's for change. He was later assassinated in 1965. -
Selma to Montgomery March
A march created by Civil Rights leaders to march form Selma to Montgomery to demand voting rights. When the march reached the Edmund Pettus Bridge they were attacked by the police force. Martin Luther King Jr joined the march and the Alabama state police protected the protesters. -
The Watts Riot
The Watts Riot occurred in a neighborhood called Watts in L.A. The riot lasted for 6 days and killed 34 people and caused $35 million in damage. The riot started by a black family being arrested and then someone threw a bottle at a police vehicle. -
The Black Panthers
The Black Panthers formed due to the culture of the 60s. This group told blacks to arm themselves for a revolution. -
Supreme Court Appointment
Thurgood Marshall, a lawer who helped win the Brown v. Board of Eductaion of Topeka was the first black to be appointed in the Supreme Court. -
Assassination of MLK
Martin Luther King Jr was I Memphis to support black sanitation workers that were having a strike against fair job treatment. He was assassinated on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel by James Earl Ray who says he's allegedly guilty.
