Desegregation at Little Rock, Arkansas
Little Rock Central High was beginning the year desegregated with a group of nine black students being followed by a mob of 1,000 local townspeople including guardsmen preventing them from walking through the front doors. Later on the 25th President Eisenhower sent paratroopers and National Guardsmen to Little Rock and Central High was officially desegregated. -
Sit-ins
Another nonviolent protest just to get served also tried to end segregating local places such as restaurants. Mainly students mainly black, but later on whites joining in were humiliated, beaten, and even allowed to be beaten by local police. -
Freedom Rides
Buses loaded with people, both black and white as another nonviolent protest to end segregated bus terminals traveled long distances with young adults. These buses were brutally stopped along the way and the passengers were even gladly sent to jail. -
March on Washington
Led by Dr. King as a nonviolent act where he gave his well known " I Have a Dream" speech. -
The 24th Amendment
Gave voting rights to citizens and couldnt be taken or interfered with poll taxes or voting taxes. -
Voting Rights Act
Led by Dr.King, a march that got beaten from police got the Govenor's attention and passed this act putting the entire registration process under federal control. -
The 26th Amendment
Gave American citizens, 18 or older the right to vote during tthe Vietnam War. The 19th amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920. -
Americans with Disabillities ACt
Prohibited discrimination against peopl with physical or mental disabilities in general from public places to employment.
