The Launch of Facebook
Facebook was launched by Harvard pupil Mark Zuckerberg alongside fellow students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The site began as a social networking site exclusive to Harvard university and contained a profile page allowing users to upload a picture and write a small biography about themselves. Microsoft get involved
Microsoft invests £240m into Facebook giving the site a reported worth of £15 billion. 2007 also marked the year when Facebook became more than just a page but an interactive tool. Poking , picture uploading and posts on other people's 'walls'. -
Dictionary Time!
Facebook becomes a word in the Oxford English Dictionary as a verb meaning 'spend time using the social networking website Facebook.' -
Games are included
Membership continued to rise and Facebook introduced fan pages, meaning users could 'like' a page and get more information about preferred bands, shows etc. The interface was also developed to allow for group gaming such as Farmville and Mafiawars. The Like and share buttons were also implemented to allow users to interact with each other and give snippets of their life - something that then appeared on users' news feeds. -
Privacy increases
Facebook strengthens its privacy features following constant criticism that it gives away too much private information. It is reported that Facebook collects as much information about its users as Google and uses it to generate adverts. There were concerns at how much of this information was shared with anyone viewing your page and so Facebook implemented new features allowing individuals to control exactly who can see what. Goldman Sachs invest

Timeline
Facebook brings in what is known as "the timeline". This is a scrolling profile where users can look back at all of their Facebook history, see old photos, when they joined, who they were friends with at certain points and old status'.
