Missouri Compromise
Huge debate over whether missouri was a slave or free state. It went as a slave state and they turned Maine into a free state so that everything was a a balanced level.They did this to prevent the South (slave) from having to much power over the North (free). This is also when they made the 36-30º from where they were free or slave states. -
Wilmot Proviso
They made the Wilmot Proviso bill which made slavery should be banned in lands that might be acquired from Mexico. This bill was never passed. They had huge debated over these bills. This bill made the southerners mad because they wanted to spread slavery throughout the nation. -
Compromise of 1860
This event had five bils. California became a free state, New Mexico became a free state, and Washington D.C. didn't allow trading or selling slaves in the area. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was in trial and fought for his slavery against his owner. The judge It took him ten years for him to get his freedom. Whe he got his freedom -
Fugitive Slave Act
This was passed on 1850 and prevented slaves from running away and captured them to give them back to there owners. -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave and fought for his freedom against his "master". He was treated a slave in a free slave state. The plantiff was found guilty but the judge said three things. First he said, Africans can't be citizens, they couldn't prevent slavery in future territories, and Congress can't remove property, also known as slaves. Thius led to the civil war and set the slaves free. It took Dred Scott ten years to gain his freedom, but his freedom last long he died shortly after he was freed. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
This book was written by Harriet Breecher Stowe. This book stunned people with her description of slavery. This book convinced people to work against slavery in the North. This led them second guessing about slavery. -
Kansa/Nebraska Act
This was a bill that let states could allow slavery with popular sovereignty. Many felt it undid the Missouri Compromise. -
Bleeding Kansas
People who were against slavery and those who supported slavery moved to Kansas to vote whether or not Kansas would allow slavery. Ther was a lot of violence at the voting. Kansas became a free state. The violence started to grow and that was the first clash over slavery. -
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Douglas was against slavery, but he believed that it should be up to the state to make the decision for themselves. Abraham Lincoln was against slavery, but he believed that Congress couldn't eliminate slavery but keep it from slavery. Two men had several debates because the were running for senatre for Illinois. Slavery was the main topic of the debate. -
John Brown's Raid
John Brown was harshly against slavery. He led a small group to capture weapons from Harper's Ferry. The plan was to arm the slaves, but didn't work out as planned. None of the slaves stood up to fight for their freedom. So John Brown's group got caught and they were captured. They went to court and the court said they were to be hanged. So John Brown was hanged and died. John Brown was a major hero in the north, but convinced the south that the north was out to destroy slavery. -
Lincoln's Election
Lincoln wasn't on the ballot of the election in 1860, but won with 40% of the votes and Douglas came in second with 30% of the votes. This created a lot of tension. -
South Carolina Secedes
After Lincoln was elected South Carolina couldn't take it anymore and decided to secede from the United States. This led to other southern states seceding from the United States. The nation headed to war. Lincoln's goal was to preserve the union.
