John sutter, a rich man, hired some workers to build him a sawmill. James Marshall was one of the workers and he started seeing gold nuggets everywhere! -

Sam Brannan found out that there was gold so he ran through the streets of California shout "Gold! Gold". Sam Brannan showed everybody a bottle of gold dust too. -

Sam Brannon bought every pan, pickax, and shovel he could find. Later he sold them for more than he bought them. People would buy from him to dig for gold. -
America the crazy!
All around America, people went to california to dig for gold! They would buy the tools they needed and head off! But in the 1800s, there were no cars or airplanes. So everyone rode horses or drove wagons. It nearly 6 months to cross the great plains and the rocky mountains.
