Luther King
Martin Luther King was shot as he stood on the balcony outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tennesssee. President Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which prohibited discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing. -

Black power
Stokely Carmichael, a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, used the expression "black power" for the first time. He meant it as an assertion of black pride and "the coming together of black people to fight for they liberation by any means necessary". -

Black Panthers
The militant Black Panthers were founded in Oakland, California. The Panters' strategy of "picking up the gun" reflected the feelings of many inner-city blacks. Louis enter in this movement. -

Malcolm X
Black nationalist and founder of the Organization of Afro-American Unity. Malcolm X was shot dead in Harlem, New York. -

Johnson Administration
After Kennedy death, Lyndon Johnson became the president. He signed the Civil Rights Act, which outlawed major forms of discrimination and ended many areas of segregation. -

March of Washington
About 200'000 people joined the March of Washington. The participants assembled at the Lincoln Memorial to listen to Martin Luther King deliver his famous "I have a dream" speach. -

James Meredith
James Meredith was the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississipi. President Kennedy had to sent 5000 federal troops to deal with the violence and riots that surrounded the event. -
