The Building of an Empire in South Africa

  • Great Trek

The Boars where Dutch people that came to the Cape od Good Hope in about 1652. Once the British arrived on the land the two groups fought over the land and the usage of slaves amoung the area. In the 1830's though, the Boers were chased out with several thousand of them escaping the British by heading North.
  • Africa Before Imperialism

In the mid-1800's in Africa, there where many different groups, religions, and languages amoung the continent. Though, most of these tended to have their own villigaes or land that they kkept away fro the other groups. With Europe only ruling bout 10% of Africa, the tribes/groups of people conducted trade themselves from what abundant locally.
  • Outside Nation Compete for the Empire Overseas

In the time of the lte 1860's a man named David Livingstone traveled with a group of Africans into central Africa. Years later he was still not heard from, with many presuming he ws dead. Thought, in 1871 he was found by a man named Henry Stanley, and headlines around the world where centered around the presumed dead man. Severeal years later, Stanley returned to the area to ask the natives for an agreement with King Leopold the second of Belgium to have these lands as his own.
  • The Agreement

The natives agreed with the king, who claimed that this would beifit them and that he would abolish the slave trade. This was lived up to with the king cutting down work amounts and allowing them more time to do their ownn essentials.
  • The Driving of Imperialism

During the time of these events imperialism was a large moive for the start of the empire. With the grow of the Industrial Revolution, Europe needed more land to do so, so they believed they could take it away from Africa. With more white moving into mostly black land, racism against the blacks began to grow, as well as the start of Social Darwinism (the idea tht those who are fittet for survival will have wealth and succes and are better then others who do not have it).
  • Invsion by Europe

In the 1880's withe the Industril Revolution, Europe was creating new machines such s the steam boat, and the maxim gun. Even with these new inventions, they were unble to go into central Africa due to one thing: malaria. This disease was transfered by mosquitoes and th Europeans were greatly affected by it. So, when they discovred to deliver the virus to others in small amounts so they can learn to fight it off, the Europeans started flooding in to Africa.
  • Berlin Conference

With the discovery of gold and diamonds inn Africa, European countries started to fight over land tht held the expensive materials. The fighting was so harsh that European countries feared that wars would break out. So, to settle things, 14 Europea n countries came together at the Berlin Conference to resolve the problem. They set a rule that to claim land in Africa they must find ad claim the land as well as tell the ther couties of their territory.
  • Put to Work

Once Europeans started to colonize in Africa, they discovered that the Africans didn't want to by many of their goods. Since they still needed the African goods they started to grow large plantation of crops such as peanuts, palm oil, cocoa, and rubber. These things had a downside though, with all of this aking up the space that use to hold families food crops. Though, the major sourch of wealth was the minerals found, holding things such as gold, diamonds, copper, and tin.
  • Zulu's

In 1816 a Zulu chief named Shaka used his highly disciplned warrioirs to create a large centralized state for his peole. Though, his succescers were unable to kee it once the Europeans moved in to tke their lannd at this time.
  • Boer War

With the discovery of gold and diamonds n Africa many so called "outsiders" began to try to take some of the fortune for themselves. The Boers attempted to kee those outsders from gaining political rights, and when that failed, they blamed the British. So, in 1899 the Boers went on in war against the British. This was the first so called "modern total war". In 1902 the British eventually won the war and the Boers joined the groups of African people controlled by the British.
  • The Change

With colonies being established by the British it chaged the Africans people's way of life. The British tried to chage the social, political, and the economic lives of the people they had taken over.
