The Brown's first involvement in slave trade happened when Captain James Brown, the brothers' father, sent the Mary to Africa.

Wheel of Fortune

Feb 22, 1759

Obadiah, his nephews, John and Nicholas, joined together with five other investors to launch the Wheel of Fortune which was their second slave ship to go to Africa.

The Sally Left Newport

Sep 10, 1764

The Sally left Newport for Africa for slave trade.

Nov 10, 1764

Nicholas Brown and company sent three ships to meet in the Caribbean. Two of the ships sold horses and other goods. The third, the Sally, was to sail first to West Africa to get slaves for the British colonies in the Caribbean.

Last Slave

Aug 20, 1765

Captain Hopkins bought his last slave on this day.

Rebellion

Aug 28, 1765

On the eighth day out, the slaves rose in rebellion. Hopkins and the crew suppressed the uprising by firing on the slaves, killing eight and injuring many.

The Middle Passage

Nov 16, 1765

Overall, 88 slaves died on the Middle Passage. The surviving slaves were sold on the Caribbean island of Antigua.
