The British Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    Every sugary drink over one gallon was taxed. This was passed to pay the debt of the British because of the French and Indian War and sugar was a sought after substance, so the passed a tax.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    All written and published goods had to have a purchased stamp on it. This was because the British were in debt and everyone used stamps so they thought it was a good idea to pass it.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    Colonists had to allow British soldiers in to their homes by law if the soldier wanted to. This was because the British didn't want to pay for housing for the soldier because they were already in debt.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    British officials could take any goods from the 13 colonies. This was because the king had no money and the colonists had lots of goods for the British to take and they had the power to do so.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    Any tea bought from the East India Company(British tea company) had a tax on it. This was because they Americans were smuggling their own tea and the British didn't like that.
  • Boston Port Act

    Boston Port Act
    Colonists are not allowed to export goods. This was because the King was angry at the Americans for doing the Boston Tea Party.
  • MA Government Act an Administration of Justice Act

    MA Government Act an Administration of Justice Act
    Colonists can't meet or get together without British permission. This was because they didn't want and rebellions or protests against the king and British rule.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    All lands of former French Quebec are now British territory and everyone living there are now British citizens, but can practice their own religion. This was because the British wanted more people under British rule.
