Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan The Soviet Union invades Afghanistan beginning three decades of war. Local tribes unite to try to fight off invading forces. Over 15,000 Soviet troops got killed in Afghanistan from 1979 until 1989. In the war, the Soviet Army also lost hundreds of aircraft, and billions worth of other military machines. Around a million Afghan men, women and children died in the war. -

Taliban Rule Afghanistan
The Taliban are an Islamic movement following a strict interpretation of Sharia that took over Afghanistan following the Soviet withdrawal. Taliban rule imposed draconian restrictions on women being allowed to work, go to school, or even leave the house -- which could only be done fully covered with a burqa and accompanied by a male relative. The Taliban granted safe haven to terrorist group al-Qaida, leading to their overthrow by a U.S.-led invasion in 2001. -
Osama Bin Ladin Returns to Afghanistan
Bin Ladin returns to Afghanistan and to Jalalabad, Afghanistan aboard a chartered flight on May 18, 1996;According to the 9/11 Commission, the expulsion from Sudan significantly weakened bin Laden and his organization. Some African intelligence sources have argued that the expulsion left bin Laden without an option other than becoming a full-time radical, and that most of the 300 Afghan Arabs who left with him subsequently became terrorists. August 1996, bin Laden declared war against the USA. -

Parvana's father is arrested by the Taliban because he attended university in England. She and her mother are beaten as they haul him away. -
Pul-e-Charki Prison
Parvana and her mother go to Pul-e-Charki prison to get her father out. The Taliban guards beat them and send them away. -
Mrs. Weera
Mrs. Weera comes to live with Parvana and her family. She helps get her mother back on her feet. Parvana's mother agrees to begin work on a magazine detailing women's plight in Afghanistan. -
Kaseem is Born
Parvana cuts her hair and adopts the persona of Kaseem, a male cousin from Jalalabad, so that she can buy and sell things in the market. -
Shauzia
Parvana meets Shauzia, a girl from her school who is also posing as a boy in order to sell tea in the market. -
Digging Up Bones
Parvana and Shauzia go to the cemetery to dig up bones and sell them to a bone-broker. They make three times what they would selling things at the market. -
The Stadium
Shauzia and Parvana enter into a stadium where they witness prisoners having their hands chopped off in order to punish them for stealing. -
Nooria Gets Engaged
Nooria gets engaged to a family friend in Mazar-e Sharif, a city in Northern Afghanistan where she will be able to go to school and have a job. -
Family Goes to Mazar-e Sharif
Nooria, Parvana's mother, Ali and Maryam travel to Mazar-e Sharif so that 17-year-old Nooria can have her arranged marriage. Parvana stays behind to make money. -
Homa
Parvana finds Homa in a bombed out building. She learns that Homa is a refugee from Mazar-e Sharif, which has now fallen under Taliban control. Parvana is terrified for the unknown fate of her family in Mazar. -
Return of the Father
Parvana's Father is Released from Pul-e-Charki Prison. -
Parvana's Journey
Parvana and her father go to Mazar to find their family, Mrs. Weera and Homa go to a refugee camp in Pakistan, Shauzia escapes to Pakistan. -
