King John Signs the Magna Carta
King John was forced to sign the Magna Carta (great charter) and it did two important things. 1) it forced monarchs to obey the laws and 2) it gave nobles rights, that were later extended to all free-men. -

King Edward I Expands Parliament
King Edward summoned Parliament to approve money for his wars in France. He had "common people" representatives join with lords and clergy. Later on the assembly became known as the Model Parliament because it sets up the framework for English legislature. -

The Development of Parliment
After the Magna Carta, English leaders relied on the Great Council for advice. This council evolved into Parliament to later become England's legislature. As parliament acquired a larger role in the government, it helped unify England. -

Centralized Power
In the high middle ages the power began to shift. The Monarch made it their goal to make a more centralized government. They enlarged their royal domain ,and set up systems of royal justice that undermined feudal and church courts They also created a stronger bond with the towns people , organized government bureaucracies, developed tax systems and built stronger armies.
