    The Beginning of Alcohol
    Alcohol is something that has been used by almost everyone since the dawn of time. Alcohol has been used for religous purposes, pleasure, and personal health reasons. Some people began to not like the use of alcohol, so they created the American Temperance Society. This consisted of about ten percent of the American population, and their job was to inform people about the bad side to alcohol and what is can do to you.
  • The Start to Prohibition

    The Start to Prohibition
    The prohibitionists were beginning to make process when the cities changed the content of their drinking water, which resulted in less alcohol usage. Then later on, there was a world wide drought and poor economy in many countries which resulted in more immigrants in the U.S. Therefore, another group was created known as the "Know-Nothings". Their job was to show the cultural differences between the immigrants and to innitially shut down the alcohol aspect to their culture.

    After the hard works of the prohibitionists, they finially had their victory when Maine enacted prohibition. After that, more and more states followed in suit. Everywhere the Know-Nothings went, that state would join in. Many prohibition laws were passed and the causes was starting to gain momentum. The Know-Nothings eventually were no longer able to handle all of the events and people when the Civial War came.

    The End to Prohibition
    While the prohibitionists did everything they could, they were not able to compete with the Civil War. The army was very reliable on the immigrants for a win in the war, and they was not gonna happen without alcohol. Therefore, the soldiers began to drink in access, therefore it was hard to stop those that were fighting for their country. As a result, the new movement caused for many of the prohibition law to be repealed and it eventually came to a close.

    Iowa's Alcohol History
    On January 20, of 1920 the Volstead Act came into play which resulted in the prohibition which followed the 18th ammendment. This act was able to prohibit all forms involving the production and distribution of alcohol. No one was allowed to make, sell, manufacture, or create alcohol or new forms of it. This then resulted in a riot and later on in 1993 this act was repealed.

    Iowa Controls Alcohol Wholesales
    During this time, Iowa became one of the first states to take control over the wholesales of alcohol. This means that they reigned over the retail of all alcohol except beer. Also during this time, people were required to have a Liquor Permit in order to purcahse liquor. Also, stores had to present various booklets and permits in order to sell the items. These types of laws have been put into place due to the fact of various studies showinf the negative effects of alcohol to the human body.

    Iowa Legislation Changes
    The government has tried to enforce some laws to essentially keep people safe. This is hard to do considering the fact that some people have a very strong liking to their alcohol and do not want to give it up. Now, the Iowa legislation has proclaimed that "grocery" stores have been redifined, they have added more people the to alcohol councils in the Legislature and permits are combined.

    All 50 states have 21 Purchase Age
    As of July, 1988 all of the fifty states had a minimum purchasing age of 21. Before this, the purchasing age was different depending on the jurisdiction of that area. In order to get to this age, Congress had to pass the National Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984. Any state that did not agree with this law would have their road construction payments withheld.

    Today's New Laws
    Just last year homebrewing beer bacem legal in all 50 states. With this, there are also limits to how much a person and or household can have per year. In most states a person can only have 100 US gallons and a household can only have 200 US gallons per year. Also because beer is taxed, breweries are only allowed to sell their own brewed beer. In addition to that, no you must have a production permit in order to produce distilled alcohols.

    Alcohol and Iowa
    As of now, if you have any opened alcohol beverages, they must be in the truck of a vehicle so passengers are not distracted. Also, the maximum alcohol content is .08 before you would have a DUI. Therefore, if you are under 21, you can only have .02 in your blood. If you recieve a DUI, it can result in a suspended liscense and or alcohol education.
