    Dwight D. Eisenhower ordered the CIA to train and arm a force of Cuban exiles for an armed attack on Cuba. Allen Dulles and Richard Bissell, were also closely affiliated with the Kennedy team. This relationship encouraged Kennedy and his inner core of followers to accept the CIA’s invasion plan despite its many potential consequences.

    Early in 1960, following Castro's decision to sign a trade treaty with the Soviet Union, the Eisenhower administration began financing and training a group of Cuban exiles to overthrow the Cuban leader. Castro responded by increasing his program of nationalizing foreign property and companies. In return, the United States began to implement cutbacks in trade with Cuba. The diplomatic break on January 3, 1961 was the culmination of an increasingly acrimonious situation.

    Shortly after midnight, approximately 1,400 Cuban exiles, begin to land on the coast of southern Cuba, in and around the Bay of Pigs. At dawn, they come under attack from the surviving planes of Castro’s air force. Two key supply ships are quickly sunk. Meanwhile, in the United States, life goes on. Billy Wilder’s The Apartment wins an Academy Award for Best Picture that evening in Los Angeles.

    After the air raids Cuba was left with only eight planes and seven pilots. Two days later five merchant ships carrying 1,400 Cuban exiles arrived at the Bay of Pigs. Two of the ships were sunk, including the ship that was carrying most of the supplies. Two of the planes that were attempting to give air-cover were also shot down.
