George Gordon Meade defends well.The Confederates appeared to have won,but the battle wasn't over yet.The Union troops fell back south through the town and retreated to Cemetery Hill & Culp's Hill. -

Union defended a range of hi;;s and ridges south of Gettysburg.Lee launched a heavy assault on the Uniuon's left flank, and then heavily assaulted the right flank of the Union.The Confederates gained groungd, but the Union still held a strong denfensive position at the end of the day. -
The Third and Last Day of The Battle of Gettysburg
The battle resumed on Culp's Hill and small cavalry battles raged to the east and south.The main event however was a Confederate infantry assault against the center of the Union line - this was known as Pickett's Charge.The charge however was stopped and driven back by Union rifle and artilley fire, causing great losses to the Confederate Army.So General Lee led the Confederate Army on a retreat back to Virginia.The Battle of Gettysburg was over with a victory to the Union.
