Burnside's Bridge, afternoon
Union General, Ambrose Burnside, led his troops to a bridge crossing the Antietam Creek. On the other side, was a group of Confederates. He tried three times to get his men across, but was repelled twice. He succeeded on the third try due to strength in numbers. The bridge came to be known as Burnside's Bridge. -

2,108 Union Men dead and 1,546 Confederate men dead. Was a Union victory when Lee was the first to retreat. Considered a turning point because it ended Lee's strategic campaign and allowed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation without being thought of as desperate to free the slaves. -
