    The tariff of 1824 was a protective tariff that was for iron products , cotton and wool textiles, and agricultural products.It's purpose was to protect American industries since British goods were being sold at a much lower price. This tariff was the start of tariffs being a regular in America.

    The South Carolina Exposition was an essay written by John C Calhoun outlining the majority of the Souths anger towards the tariff of 1828. Calhoun believed the tariff was unconstitutional and wanted states to get together and rally against it. At the time no states completely supported Calhoun.

Almost all European manufacturers were able to sell their goods at a lower price which made it very tough for American manufacturers. The south were furious about this tariff because they often traded with Europeans; they referred to it as the tariff of abominations.

    South Carolina were completely against the new tariffs because they greatly hurt their economy and standard of living. They nullified the new tariffs and threatened to secede from the nation if Jackson tried to collect revenue from them by force.

    In an effort to scare South Carolina Jackson threatened to send troops to collect tariff revenue. The troops were never sent because he didn't want to start any kind of war in the nation. Instead he pushed Congress to pass the Force Bill.

    The governor of south carolina at the time was Robert Haynes. Haynes believed that if a state was oppressed by a law it could deem it unconstitutional. This was completely opposing Jackson's point of view and angered Jackson. Troops were being sent down to south carolina and it looked like war was upon the nation.

    The Force Bill was a bill passed so Andrew Jackson could use the army and navy to collect revenue on the tariffs. Soon after this south carolina nullified this bill which made the tariffs void. Both sides were now at a standstill and the tension was getting very high.

    To end the tension Clay proposed a compromise as a response to the Force Bill. South Carolina would have to repeal their nullification but over time the tariffs placed on them would lessen. South Carolina at first was very reluctant but eventually they agreed to these terms.

    South Carolina finally repealed their nullification after years of tension and struggle.Henry Clay and John C. Calhoun had worked out a compromise that they felt worked out for them. This nullification was the end of the nullification crisis, but was in a way a foreshadowing of the civil war.
