The Stamp Act
British leaders needed to cover the costs of the Seven Years War. In order to do this, Parliament implemented the Stamp Act, which imposed that newspapers/legal documents need a stamp to signify a tax has been paid to Britain. -
First Continental Congress
Due to all the protests from colonists, The First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia. Members joined at this meeting were encouraged to join militias. -
Stamp Act Repealed
The colonists stronly opposed the Stamp Act and it was repealed on this day, shortly after it was announced. This did not completely resolve the problems though. -
Declaration of Independence
On this date, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Second Continental Congress. This document written by Thomas Jefferson began the American Revolution. -
Recognition of the new U.S.
On this day, the French granted dimplomatic recognition to the new Unitied States. French officers served with Washington. -
Cornwallis Surrenders
General Cornwallis surrendered to the American and French on this day. Support from the French was crucial to this victory. -
Treaty of Paris
On this day, The Treaty of Paris was signed, signifying that the American Colonies were independent from Britain. This also gave America possesion of western territory. -
Revision of Articles of Confederation
The delegates decided to plan for an enitrely diffferent government then before. On this date, they met in Philadelphia to revise the Articles of Confederation.
