A crowd was harassing a group of British soldiers guarding the customs house when a soldier was knocked down by a snowball and discharged his gun, sparking a volley into the crowd which kills five colonists. -

The First Shot of the War
The first shots were fired just after dawn in Lexington, Massachusetts the morning of the 19th, the "Shot Heard Round the World." -

The first major battle of the Revolutionary war. The British lost 1,054 lives while the colonies lost 367.
