Texas Battles of the Civil War

  • Battle of Sabine Pass

In 1862, the Union quickly captured the Sabine as a result of a Confederate surrender. However, the Union failed to see the advantages of the nearby town of Sabine; the Confederates were able to establish Fort Griffin there. Because of this advantage, 47 Confederates were able to take down 4,000 Union soldiers and 20 warships, surprisingly with just 6 artillery guns and a fort mainly made from compact mud. Union orders also made back-up come too late.
  • Battle of Galveston

Commander William B. Renshaw and his Confederate forces led eight ships to take on the Union blockade at Port Galveston. In a battle that would lead to 26 deaths and 117 casualties on both sides, Union forces would retreat out to sea, and the Confederacy would maintain control of Galveston for the remainder of the war.
  • The Battle of Palmito Ranch

Often thought of as the final battle of the Civil War, the Battle of Palmito Ranch took place from May 12, 1865, to May 13 at Palmito Ranch, Texas. Led by Col. John Salmon "Rip" Ford, the Confederacy would end up winning the battle against Theodore Harvey Barret's Union forces. After fighting for quite some time, Barret called a retreat in which they were chased for about 7 miles until Ford called it off. Confederates would later surrender to Union forces altogether, thus ending the war.
