Nat Turner's rebellion
Nat Turner, a slave brought up an uprising that wen all the way to Southern Virginina. Fifty five slaves including Nat Turner were executed for the uprising. -
The Compromise of 1850
The compromise prevented territioral expansion, while supporting the Fugitive Slave Act. The slave act allowed Northerners to return escaped slaves to the South. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin became America's secon best selling book. The book addressed the ongoing isssues about slavery and it's effects. -
Bleeding Kansas
Passed by the U.S. Congress, the Kansas Nebraska Act allowed Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves if they wanted to allow slavery among their borders. The act overturned the Missouri Compromise. Pro and anti slavery agitators went to Kansas to try to change the ruling, but both groups ended up fighting for five years. Fifty six lives were lost. -
John Brown's Raid
Wanting to gather weapons for an assault against slavery in the south, John Brown along with 21 volunteers, including African Americans took over the federal arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. John Brown eventually had to surrender and was later executed for his actions -
The election
Abraham Lincoln is elected President of the United States. In the election he had 180 of 303 votes,as well as recieving 40 percent of the popular vote.His Party's anti-slavery outlook struck fear in many Southerners . -

The Battle of Fort Sumter
With secession, Fort Sumter became a base for foreign land. And despite asking for peace, Before Lincoln's ships's arrived at the Fort, Davis ordered Confederate forces to capture the land. -

Antietam
Known as the bloodiest day in U.S. military history, Robert E.Lee and confederate armies are stopped at Antietam by Mcclellan and union forces. 26,000 men are dead. -
Emancipation Proclamation
Issued by Lincoln, the Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in territories held by confederates, as well as recruiting black soliders in the Union Army. -
The Battle of Gettysburg
Known as the largest battle fought in North America, General Lee leads an invasion of the North and goes against a Union Force led by General George Meade. Lee eventually loses the battle. Confederate lost 28,000 men while Lee lost 23,00 men. -
The Gettysburg addresss
Lincoln reads the Gettysburg address at a ceremony, dedicating it to the men who fought in the Gettysburg battle. The address talked about how people contiune the work of the founding fathers of America and to continue to fight for freedom. -
The re-election
Lincoln is re-elected the president of the United States, beating democrat George B. Mcclellan. Lincoln wins with a 55% of the popular vote and 212 of 233 electoral votes -
The Thirteenth Amendment
The amendment is passed by congress. Slavery is finally abolished -
The death of a great leader
John Wilkes Booth shoots Lincoln in the head and dies at Ford's Theater, during the play of Our American Cousin. Andrew Johnson becomes president. -
The 14th Amendment
To make sure that former slaves were treated fairly, the 14th Amendment was passed. This made sure that states could not deny former slaves their civil rights. -
The Reconstruction act
Passed by the Republican Congress, the act divided the South in to seperate military groups. This act also ensured that confederate collaborators were removed from government posts. -
The completion of the reconstruction
With the inclusion of the 15th Amendment that allowed everyone to vote, the Amendments forced Southern states like Mississippi, Texas, and Virgina to accept both the 15th and 14th Amendment before readmitting to the Union. This completed the reconstructing of the Union.
