The Evolution of the Airplane

  • Invention

    Invention
The airplane was invented by Wilbur and Orville Wright. Other inventors saw their idea and started to add on to their great creation. The Wright brothers originally started out by building machines with flapping wings called ornithopters. They discovered quickly that they were going to need something much larger to hold a machine and a human up for a long period of time. Thus became the airplane.

  • Automatic Gyrostabilizer

    Automatic Gyrostabilizer
Lawrence Sperry invented the automatic gyrostabilizer which eventually, in the later futer, lead to the first automatic piolet. This was one of the major improvements that later lead to the modern airplane. This same man also created the automatic piolet which is now standard to all aircrafts worldwide.

  • War Planes

    War Planes
The first war planes were created for World War ll and they were created after World War l. One of the main contributers to this product was Glenn H. Curtiss. These planes were later added to by adding bombs and guns to help the military in combat. Planes are smaller and lighter now, for the ability to move faster. Designers have begun to use a stronger but lighter metal to surround the plane.

  • Mail Airlines

    Mail Airlines
Planes were able to carry mail which meant that the cargo space expanded and the wing design was changed to accomadate to more weight. The time of mail travel was reduced by 3 days concidering that the first efficient mail travel was by train. As time continued air crafts became larger as well as the cargo space.

  • First Commercial Airliner

    First Commercial Airliner
Boeing introduces the 247, a twin-engine 10-passenger monoplane that is the first modern commercial airliner. This airliner has variable-pitch propellers and improved the process of landing and take off. Boeing sparked other engineers to make planes lighter bigger but yet still hold many people. All of the planes we have today are based off of this plane. Ex: more engines.

  • Jet Engines Designed

    Jet Engines Designed
The jet engine was designed by Frank Whittle. He developed this additon specificaly for the Royal Air Ministry. The first jet airliner was called the Heinkel HE 178. The addition of jet engines later inspired other engineers to build bigger and faster planes for our military.

  • Safety

    Safety
In this year and the years following arospace engineers came together in agreement that modern planes needed safety. In the year 1986 fire extinguishers and smoke detectors were added to planes. This was a major improvement and it made more people want to fly on planes. It is now required on all air flights worldwide.
