Napoleon’s birth
He was the fourth, and second surviving, child of Carlo Buonaparte, a lawyer, and his wife, Letizia Ramolino. He was born in Ajaccio, but shortly moved to the mainland. -

Becoming an officer in the French army
At age nine he was sent to France to be trained for his military career. He graduated from the academy at age 16. He was a 20 year old lieutenant, eager to make a name for himself. -
Military campaign in Egypt and Syria
He was hoping to disrupt British trade with India, he led an expedition to Egypt. It turned out to be a major disaster, but he kept these stories of him failing suppressed. He did this by getting spies and censoring the press. -
Coup d’état
He helped overthrow the weak Directory, and set up a three man governing board known as the Consulate. He then gained some followers and power. -
Napoleon’s coronation
Napoleon acquired enough power to hold the title Emperor of France. During the coronation, before the pope placed the crown on his head, Napoleon took the crown and placed it on his head. By doing this it was meant to show he "owed the throne to no one but himself." -
Napoleonic code
It was principles such as equality of all citizens before the law, religious toleration, abolition of feudalism. These principles originated from the Enlightenment age. -
The Battle of Trafalgar
Napoleon was ready to invade England, the battle occurred off the southwest coast of Spain. They were immediately stopped by Admiral Horatio Nelson, of England. -

The Grand Empire
The result was known as the Grand Empire. Having attached Tuscany, Piedmont, Genoa, and the Rhineland directly into France, Napoleon placed the Kingdom of Holland under his rule. This was over the 7 years where he reigned all over Europe. -
Joseph Bonaparte becomes King of Spain
He was a french diplomat, and the older brother of the King of France Napoleon Bonaparte. After conquering Spain Napoleon chose his brother to become King of Spain. -
The Battle of Wagram
It was a battle, that occurred because the Austrians wanted revenge after the Battle of Austerlitz. Napoleon eventually triumphed, and Austria surrendered the land to him. -
Invasion of Russia
About 600,000 soldiers and 50,000 horses went into Russia. The Russians did not want to fight Napoleon so they retreated, burning crops and villages. However he soon came to the conclusion he couldn't feed his army so he attempted to return back to France unscathed. Most of troops died to famine,and the Russians. -
Battle of the Nations (Leipzig)
This occurred with the new alliance of Russia, Britain, Austria and Prussia, they then attacked the crippled France. Napoleon was soon defeated at the Battle of Nations at Leipzig -
Napoleon’s exile to Elba
Once Napoleon was abdicated, or lost power in France. The nations exiled him to Elba, Elba is an island in the Mediterranean. -
Napoleon’s return
After the restoration of Louis XVIII things did not go as planned. He soon fled, and Napoleon gained his regime back, he escaped his exile to Elba and returned to Paris. -
The Battle of Waterloo
His return only lasted for 100 days, the allies began to get there forces together. The forces met near the town of Waterloo, Belgium. British forces and Prussia crushed France in a day long battle. -
Napoleon’s exile to St. Helena
After the crushing defeat he was forced to abdicate. He was then sent to St. Helena, a small depressing island in the South Atlantic, once sent he never returned to France.
