  • European trade with africa becomes well established

    During the 1850's, Europe and Africa created a well organized trading plan. The Europeans wanted to take control of Africa and take advantage of the raw materials. However, this did not go as planned and deseases made it difficult for European travel.
  • East India Company collapses due to Sepoy Rebellion; British Raj begins

    The Sepoy Mutiny rebelled against the East India Company because beef and pork was used in wax cartridges for the Enfield Rifles, which was a problem for the soldiers. This rebellion lasted more than a year to regain control of the country.
  • Suez Canal links the Miditerranean and Red Seas

    The Suez Canal is a man-made waterway that connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. It was built with the money from private french interest groups, using Egyption labor. Isma'il, the main supporter of the Suez Canal, threw a celebration party, but unfortuneatly lost most of his money due to the expenses of the party.
  • Berlin Conference convenes to discuss terms for African colonization

    The Berlin Conference was when multiple countries of Europe met to discuss the layout of the land in Africa. They decided how to divide the land to avoid war.
  • Queen Liliuokalani takes the throne of Hawaii

    Queen Liliuokalani was the last and only queen of Hawaii. She was later removed from office by Americans.
  • Ethiopians defeat the invading Italians at the Battle of Adwa

    The Emporer of Ethiopia, Menelik II, defeated the Italians by gathering weapons from France and Russia. He went to war because he saw a difference in the treaty that the Ethiopians and Italians were making. In the Italian version, it said the Italians could take most of the land, where as in the Ethiopian language, Menelik II thought he was only giving up a small piece of land.
  • Spanish-American War breaks out; Puerto Rico, Spain, and thePhilippines taken from Spain

    The Spanish-American War was Cuba fighting Spain. The Americans assisted Cuba, and they defeated the Spanish in 4 months.
  • Boer War in South Africa

    The Boer War was when the British tried to take over the Dutch Settlers. They fought back, and South Africans assisted, but the British won.
  • Most of Africa is under European control

    The Scrable for Africa was when Europe tried to take control of as much of Africa as possible. In the end, Ethiopia was the only independent country.
