Apollo 13
Apollo 13, the third lunar landing attempt, was set to land in the Fra Mauro area on the moon. However, an explosion on board caused the ship to circle the moon, but not land. It is known as a successful failure because despite its complications, the crew survived. -
First Earth Day
Considered to be the beginning of the modern environmental movement, Earth Day was made to focus attention on protecting our environment. Before this, pollution was accepted and companies who polluted did not have to worry much about any bad press. Concern had already been building up because of Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” in 1962. Earth Day made environmental concerns visible for all. -
Kent State Massacre
When students in Kent State University were protesting the American invasion of Cambodia, Ohio National Guard soon came to break it up. The guardsmen shot several unarmed students. Nine people were wounded, but four died. One person who was injured was paralyzed for life. Afterwards in response, hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools were forced to close because of a student strike of four million students. -

Cigarette Ads Banned from Television
Source Before the Public Health Cigarette Smoking Act, one could turn on the Television and see a commercial for cigarettes. Exposure to advertisements targeted at adolescents caused very young people to start smoking. Even small children could have gotten ideas from seeing Fred Flintstone advertising Winston Cigarettes (that actually happened). -
Walt Disney World Grande Opening
Disney, a company beloved by people everywhere, created Disney World to be a lot like Disney Land, but surrounded by first-class recreational facilities, campgrounds, hotels and a futuristic city. Walt Disney had always wished he had bought more land when making Disney Land to stop hotels and restaurants from springing up around it. People's Republic of China Joins the United Nations
From October 24, 1945 to November 24, 1971 the Republic of China (Taiwan) was a part of the United Nations. The People’s Republic of China (Mainland China) took its place. However, why did the Republic of China resign from it? The answer is simple. When Resolution 2785 was passed, it made it so the People’s Republic of China was "the only legitimate representative of China to the United Nations", and thus removed the Republic of China from its place in the UN. -

Munich Massacre
During the 1972 Summer Olympics, taking place in Munich, Bavaria in West Germany, the “Munich Massacre” occurred. Eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and killed by the Palestinian group called “Black September”. Soon after the situation began, Palestinians demanded the release of 234 prisoners from Israeli jails. First Video Game Pong Realeased
Pong, was a great success when it came out. It was first released as an arcade game, but its popularity eventually led to Atari creating a home version during the 1975 Christmas season. Pong is still very present in our minds. To this day the tennis-themed game is recognized as the first successful video game. -
