The Korean War Begins
North Korea strikes South Korea so that Communism will spread. United States wants to get in the war so that they can stop the spread of Communism. The Soviet Union assisted North Korea while the United States assisted South Korea. On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces surprised the South Korean army (and the small U.S. force stationed in the country). The U.S. responded by calling the U.N. for military assistance. -

Death of Stalin
Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin dies from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 73. Cerebral hemorrhage is the fancy term for stroke. A battle for succession among Kremlin insiders will last almost two years before Nikita Khrushchev emerges as the undisputed Russian leader. -
Ceasefire Ends Korean War
A ceasefire is agreed to in Korea, ending the war that had started in 1950 and leaving the country divided between the North who is Communist and South who was fighting against Communism. -
Segregation is Illegal and rules Unconstitutional
Racial segregation in public schools is declared unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court in Brown vs. the Board of Education. The ruling of the court stated that racial segregation violated the 14th Amendment's law that guaranteed equal protection. The Monroe School in Topeka, Kansas had segregated Linda Brown in its classes. -
Rosa Parks Arrested
In Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on a city bus to a white man and is arrested. This peaceful boycott coordinated by Martin Luther King Jr, is the turn around point for segregation in the US -
Interstate Highway System
Eisenhower signs the Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956, which will create the Interstate Highway system, one of the biggest public works projects in US history. This will make traveling so much faster. -
Sputnik-The Soviets pull ahead
The Soviets launch Sputnik, the first manmade satellite. This will fear the United States because the Soviet's will be more ahead in technology and also in the Space Race. -
US Launches Satellite- Explorer 1
The U.S. launches its first satellite, Explorer I, marking U.S. entry into the "space race" with the Russians. The Space Race fires up the Soviets and the United States to become more tecnological than each other. Other technology will be invented and become a success into the world's society. -
Soviets Land Spacecraft on the Moon
The Soviet Union lands a unmanned space craft onto the moon. It is the first aircraft to reach the moon which this will put the Soviet Union ahead in the Space Race against the United States. Again, this fears the United States that the USSR is becoming more technological
