The first English settlement on North America, consisted of 91 men, 17, women and 9 children. They settled in Roanoke Island, North Carolina. -

Division of Atlantic Seaboard
King James I had divided the Atlantic Seaboard in two, the Northern part was for the Plymouth Company and the Southern Part for the London Company(Virginia Company in the near future). -

The London Company had sent 144 men to Virginia on 3 ships, The Godspeed, The Discovery and The Susan Constant. -
Jamestown
Settlers built a settlement 60 miles up the James River called, Jamestown. -
Living in James Town
Settlers wasted their time and energy looking for gold that they started to go hungry, the colonists learned how to grow tobacco and the colony might survive. -
African Slaves in Virgina
First African slaves arrived in Virginia. -
Pilgrims
Pilgrims would later be the first English emigrants to arrive in the New England Colonies. The Natives would teach them how to hunt and fish in these new lands. -
The Royal Colony
King revoked the Virginia Company's charter, and it became a Royal Colony. -
Tobacco Colonies
The Crown granted 12 million acres of land at the top of Chesapeake Bay to Cecilius Calvert, the 2nd Lord Baltimore. The Colony was named Maryland after the Queen and had huge plantations of tobacco that demanded hard labor from African slaves. Lord Baltimore hoped his colony would be a refuge to persecuted Catholics as he was very religious. -
Duke of York
King Charles II gave territory between New England and Virginia which was occupied by Dutch Traders and landowners to his brother Duke of York. English influenced the area of New Nether land and it renamed to New York. A lot of people from places like Belgium, France, Germany and Scandinavia moved in and New York became the most diverse colony. -
Puritans
Puritans who thought that Massachusetts wasn't devout enough, formed a new colony called Connecticut. Puritans who thought it was too strict formed Rhode Island where people had freedom -
Pennsylvania
The King granted 45,000 miles of land west of the Delaware River to William Penn a rich Irish man. He named in Penn's Woods later Pennsylvania and, many people from all over Europe came. It had fertile soil and religious toleration. -
Carolina Colonies
The Carolina colonies grew a lot then split. -
Georgia
The Englishmen wanted to seperate South Carolina from the Spanish settlements in Florida so they made a new colony called Georgia. James Oglethorpe established it.
