The 13 colonies were a group of colonies that are on the East Coast. They came to America for freedom, and other reasons -
Arrival at Roanoke
In 1587, they arrived at Roanoke island. Some of the people in the fort there were killed by some of the Native Americans. -
Landing at Virginia's James River
Over 100 men landed on the banks of James River. John Smith, their leader told them to build a fort. Winter came, and they were getting sick. Plus, they were running out of food. After Winter, only 60 survived. Then, they went to make the first English colony, Jamestown. -
The House of Burgesses
The House of Burgesses was the first chosen assembly. A govenor named George Yeardly came and said that Virginia voted to destroy the millitary government and make a "legislative" assembly. That is what created the House of Burgesses. -
The Mayflower has Landed
The Mayflower landed in Cape Cod, which is in Plymouth Massachusetts. The Mayflower held over a hundred passengers, and there was a baby born on the ship. Some passengers were Pilgrims. -
The Mayflower Compact
When the Mayflower arrived, they weren't near the power of Jamestown, so they made the Mayflower Compact. This helped make laws, and it kept the colony in order. -
The First Thanksgiving
The settlers at Plymouth celebrated with having a lot of food. They used this time to pray and to do "fasting." -
Land to William Penn
King Charles the second gave land to William Penn because Charles owed William's father a loan. William Penn originally would've called it "Sylvania (meaning woods)," but then called Pennsylvania. -
The Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was an event when the settlers got tired of being taxed on tea. So some settlers disguised themselves as Native Americans, and threw 342 boxes of tea into the ocean. But the British decided to make the settlers on Boston pay until all of the boxes of tea are paid for. -
The Revolutionary War
The Revolutionary War was fought because the settlers on the east coast wanted freedom, but the British wanted the settlers to stay British. The British wanted the settlers to follow Britain's rules. But the settlers didn't want that, this caused the Revolutionary war. Later, the Declaration of Independence was written so that the settlers can be a free country. -
