The first Puritans arrive

-Came to practice religous beliefs, but didn't want to break away from the church of England like the pilgrims
-They wanted to make the church more pure, so they were called Puritans
-They built Salem, a villge on Massachusetts Bay

John Winthrop Arrives

-John Winthrop leads 2nd group of Puritans to Massachusetts Bay Colony

Maryland is founded

Disagreements with Church and Government in Masaachusetts

-Anne Hutchinson and Roger Williams were 2 people who believed the be separate from the colony's Government
-Puritan leaders vote to expel Williams from Massachusetts
-Connecticut is founded

Puritans founded Harvard College, now known as Harvard University

-First College in the english colonies
-Rhode Island is founded

Anne Hutchison is Forced to leave Massachusetts

Apr 28, 1637

-Both Williams and Hutchison started settlements that joined to form Rhode Island Colony

Delaware is founded

Toleration act

Apr 28, 1649

-Maryland passed the Toleration act. This act gave religous freedom to all Christians

New York and New Jersey is founded

Apr 28, 1664

King Phillip's War

Apr 28, 1675

-Disagreements over land led to war between the colonists and Native Americans
-Metacomet or King Phillip, the leader of the Wampanog, united many tribes to fight againsts the colonists
-hundreds of colonists and Native Americans were killed, including Metacomet

Pennsylvania is founded

Apr 28, 1682

-William Penn an English Quaker, got approval to start a colony, he named it Pennsylvania
-He also became the owner or proprietor of Delaware
-Penn wrote The Frame of Government of Pennsylvania. It gave people freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to trial by jury

Middle Passage

Apr 28, 1700

-Trading ships carrying goods and raw materials also carried enslaved people from central and west Africa
Middle Passage-Millions of enslaved Africans were placed on ships and forced to travel across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to the English Colonies

North and South Carolina

Apr 28, 1712

-Carolina was split into 2 colonies - North and South Carolina

Great Awakening

Apr 29, 1720

-New religous movement begins. It "awakened or renewed many peoples interest in religion
-Poor people, women, and enslaved people even started taking part in religous gatherings

Georgia is Founded

Fort Mose

Apr 29, 1738

-Fort Mose was the first free African settlement in North America
-Some were set free by their owners, some bought their freedom
