Texas Celebrates the Centennial
Texans celebrated the 100th anniversary of Texas independence with statewide festivities. The U.S. issued commemorative three-cent stamps and half-dollars to observe the anniversary. The Centennial Exposition was held in Dallas on the state fairgrounds. -
Beaumont Riot
This all started when an African-American man was accused of assaulting an 18-year old white woman. The suspect was shot and killed by police for allegedly resisting arrest. Intense race riots occurred during World War 2. -
Browns v. Board of Education; end of Segregation in Public Schools
The ruling of this further extended those rights to all schools in the Unite States. Students of all races were allowed to attend the same schools and San Antonio was among the first cities in the U.S. to comply with the order. -
Manned space craft center opens in Houston
In 1957 the U.S.S.R. launched Sputnik and Sputnik 2, the first artificial satellites sent into orbit from Earth. The Manned Spacecraft Center was built in 1962 just outside of Houston.Mission control responsibilities were designated to the Center in 1963. -
President John F. Kennedy Assassinated in Dallas
On November 22, Kennedy flew to Dallas to speak at a luncheon. En route from the airport, Kennedy rode in an open car motorcade thought downtown Dallas, along with his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally and Texas First Lady Nellie Connally. As entering Dealey Plaza on Elm street, shots rang out. Kennedy was then rushed to Parkland Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after. -
George H.W. Bush Elected President of the United States
Born in Massachusetts in 1924, George H.W.Bush moved to Texas in the 1940’s following service as a pilot in World War 2 and an education in Yale University. In 1966, Bush was elected to Congress from Texas's 7th district in Harris County. From there he moved on to serve as ambassador to the United Nations, director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and vice-president of the United States under Ronald Reagan. Bush was elected to the presidency in 1988. -
George W. Bush Elected 46th Governor of Texas; President in 2000
George Walker Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1946., the oldest son of future president George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara. Bush grew up in Texas before being sent east to attend Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Educated at Yale University, he served in the Air National Guard, then earned a Master's degree in Business Administration from Harvard University in 1975. In 2000, Bush was elected president of the United States, and reelected in 2004.
