Spanish agree to allow American Moses Austin to create a colony in Tejas.

Independence from Spain
Mexico gained independence from Spain and Tejas became part of Mexico. -
Outlaw Slavery
Slave owners became angry when Mexico outlawed slavery. They wanted to maintain slavery to grow cotton. Austin convinced the government to allow slave owners to keep their slaves. -
Population Growth
The colony attracted many settlers. People were looking for new life , escaping law, and chances to become rich. by this time the population was at about 25,000, with Americans outnumbering Tejanos six to one. -

Austin is jailed after Mexican president finds out Austin threatened to break Tejas away from Mexico if he didn't agree to his demands -
War Begins
Santa Anna sent troops to Texas. They marched around Gonzales seizing a cannon used by the Texans for protection againset Native Americans. Texas volunteers had hung a flag over the big gun that said, "Come and Take It". -
Washington-on-the-Brazos
Texans met in a settlement called Wahington-on-the-Brazos to figure out what to do about Santa Anna's troops. They declared Texas a free and independent republic. Sam Houstan was placed in command of the Texas army. -
John Seguin
John Seguin led 25 Tejanos to support the revolt. But they barely had an army there were two small forces of some few hundred people ready to stand up to Santa Anna army. -
War Ends
on the 13th day Santa Anna ordered his army to storm the fortress until the Texans ran out of ammunition. At the end of the day only seven Texans were alive. -
Surprise Attack
Houstan surprised Santa Anna near the San Jacinto River, screaming "remember the Alamo" and "remember Goliad". 18 minutes later the Texans had killed more than half of Santa Annas army. Santa Anna was forced to sign a treaty giving Texas its freedom. -
Independent at last
In December the Texans raised the official flag of the independent nation of Texas, its nickname was the Lone Star. Many Texans wanted to become an United State, in 1836 Congress signed, and Texas became a state.
