Cabeza de Vaca

La Salle
Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle built Fort St. Louis located in Matagorda Bay. He formed the basis of France's claim to Texas. Sadly he was murdered by his own men. -

Austin Grant
Stephen F. Austin started colonization on the Brazos River after he recieved a grant from the Mexican government. -
Mexican Independence
The constition made in 1824 gave Mexico a republican form of government but was not able to define the rights of the states in the republic. -
Austin imprisoned
After Stephen Austin presented a new constitution to Santa Anna he was thrown in jail where he was released 8 months later. -
Battle at Gonzales
The Texans repulsed a detachment of the Mexican cavalry which began the revolution. -
Battle of Alamo
The Texans which were under the command of Colonel William B. Travis were overwhelmed by the Mexican army at the Alamo. -
Runaway Scrape begins
During the Runaway Scrape colonists gathered their belongings and ranaway from their homes when Santa Anna's army moved eastward unopposed. -
Massacre at Goliad
Nearly 400 men were executed at the by the Mexicans at the Massacre at Goliad at the order of Santa Anna. -
Battle of San Jacinto
The Battle of San Jacinto was one of the most decisive battles ever. In this battle the Texans routed the Mexican forces and won their independence. -
Texas joins the United States
James Polk, the United States President, signed legislation which made Texas the 28th state of the United States. -
Texas secedes and joins Confederacy
After a vote of 171 to 6 Texas seceeded and joined the Confederacy. Sam Houston was part of the small group that voted against secession. -
Battle of Galveston
At the Battle of Galveston Texas's seaports which had been taken control of by the Union were restored to the Confederacy for the remainder of the Civil War.
