Temple of Artemis

    First Temple

    The first shrine of the goddess Artemis was built around 800 B.C. on a marshy strip near the river at Ephesus.

    The third temple was built in 560 B.C. by a wealthy King named Croesus who conquered Ephesus.

    Conquering Ephesus

    550 BC, King Croesus and Lydia conquered Ephesus and the other Greek cities of Asia Minor. During the fighting, the temple was destroyed.

    In 356 BC, a young Ephesian named Herostratus set fire to the wooden roof of the building and he managed to burn the structure down to the ground.

    Invasion of the Goths

    In 262 AD, The city was invaded by the Goths, looting tribes from the north. In that process, the temple was demolished, and it’s treasure raided.
