In 725 Greeks and Egyptians designed a water clock. This used water to measure time. -

Sundial
The people of Babylonia had begun to use a sundial. The gnomon, a marker, cast a shadow on the dial as the suns position changed throughout the day. -
150 BCE
Hourglass
The hourglass was the first invention that kept track of time without using the position of the sun. The size dictated which measurement one was taking. If it was small it was for minutes.
