The exact origin of the teepee is unknown. Teepees were widely used throughout the American West by the Native American tribes of the Great Plains. Among these tribes were those of the Sioux nation, Arapaho, Crow, Cheyenne, Omaha, Osage, Blackfoot, and many others. Origin of the Word Teepee
Teepee, also spelled tipi, comes from the Lakota language of the Sioux. "Thipi" in Lakota is a verb which means "they dwell." Just as in English, the verb can be used as a noun. T -

There were many different types of American Indian houses in North America. Each tribe needed a kind of housing that would fit their lifestyle and their climate. Since North America is such a big continent, different tribes had very different weather to contend with. In the Arizona deserts, temperatures can hit 120 degrees Fahrenheit, and in the Alaskan tundra, -50 is not unusual.
