Theodore Roosevelt is born
He was born in New York, NY to a wealthy family. He was well-educated and attended college, graduating in 1880. He then went on to serve in the New York State Legislature and start a family by 1884 with his wife Alice Lee. -
Named president when McKinley was assassinated
McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition September 14th, 1901. Shortly after Roosevelt stepped up from vice president to president. -
Energy Crisis: Coal strike
Coal miners held a strike for better wages and hours. This was ended by Roosevelt taking the side of the workers and raising wages by 10% and lowering hours. -
Elkins Act passed
Stephen B. Elkins suggested this act and it was passed by the 57th congress and signed by Teddy Roosevelt. This act prevented rebates from continuing in the railroad industry. This protected fair pricing for the railroad and consumer. -
Pelican Island, Florida named first national wildlife refuge
This refuge was created to protect wildlife like egrets and other birds from hunting. This was a part of the conservation and preservation of nature that Roosevelt felt was important and implemented during his presidency. This is still a national wildlife refuge and protects the area off of the Florida coast. -
Wins first full term as President
He defeated Democratic nominee Alton B. Parker. This made history because he was the first former Vice president that rose to President to win his own full term as President. -
Passage of Pure Food and Drug Act
This act required inspection and correct food labels. This was the start of a series of consumer protection laws. Interstate traffic was especially targeted by this law and banned the transportation of mislabeled foods or drugs over state lines. -
Yosemite under Federal Control
Roosevelt had loved nature and because of this spent days exploring Yosemite with John Muir. John Muir was an outspoken Conservationist and influences Roosevelt. Roosevelt soon after he signed the American Antiquities act of 1906 that transferred control of Yosemite to Federal powers. -
Devils Tower named first national monument
Teddy Roosevelt named this the first national monument. The Devil's Tower is sacred and respected by natives and is now part of American culture as well. -
Leaves presidency and visits Africa
Roosevelt declined to re-run for president in 1908 and once Taft was inaugurated he left for Africa with his son Kermit. They hunted together killing over 500 animals, often times what we would consider endangered animals today. -
Runs for presidency, unsuccessfully for Bull-Moose Party
This party voted for Roosevelt in 1912 to begin social reforms such as women's suffrage. A main point of this was the 'square deal' that Roosevelt proposed to have fair business and increased welfare for those in need. He was not successful in this election and lost to William H. Taft.
