Technology Timeline

  • Period: to

    2000s

Some of the most used technologies on the planet today were first produced and released in this decade.
  • PlayStation 2

    PlayStation 2
The first iteration of Sony's PlayStation 2 released in North America in the Fall of 2000, and would become to be one of the best selling video consoles of all time. This innovative piece of home gaming brought DVD players into many homes for a reduced price point than what most DVD players were going for at the time. I would later bring online gaming to its feature set and cement Sony's place at the video game industry table.
  • Sony BDP-S1

    Sony BDP-S1
The Sony BDP-S1 (Blu-ray Disc Player) was the first consumer Blu-ray player made available in North America and would help to revolutionize the disc-based media industry. Blu-ray Discs are the same size as DVDs, but with more than five times the storage capacity. Blu-ray players would begin to proliferate more thanks to video game consoles like the Sony PlayStation 3 which used a Blu-ray Disc reader for its games.
  • The First iPhone

    The First iPhone
The first iPhone would bring us into a new age of personal communication devices and considered by many to be one of the greatest technological inventions of all time. While there were other smartphones available at the time, the iPhone simplified the overall experience by using a capacitive touch screen instead on analog buttons. It also helped bring about the use of "Apps" for the various programs and operations it could do. The iPhone helped shape the future of the mobile tech industry.
  • The First MacBook Air

    The First MacBook Air
The first MacBook Air stunned audiences when first presented by Steve Jobs. Never had anyone seen a laptop so thin while remaining so capable as a PC. Apple was helping to push the industry into a new direction of slim and sleek unibodies filled with no-nonsense internals. As technologies for the various hardware components became smaller and thinner, along with software becoming more optimized and efficient, we are now living in a world of completely solid state devices. No more fans!
  • The First iPad

    The First iPad
The decade would be capped by the introduction of the iPad. The larger than life piece of technology astounded many by its size, but most were captivated in the thought of having a larger screen to complete tasks and view media that were already doing on their iPhone. The iPad helped to start the "Bigger is Better" mentality for screen sizes in portable consumer electronics, and would eventually spill over to smartphones and even laptops as well.
