    In Mesopotamia, (c. 1600-1200 BC) a type of soft shoes were worn by the mountain people who lived on the border of Iran. The soft shoe was made of wraparound leather, similar to a moccasin. As late as 1850, most shoes were made on absolutely straight lasts, with no difference between the right and the left shoe.

    The first American schools in the thirteen original colonies opened in the 17th century. Boston Latin School was founded in 1635 and is both the first public school and oldest existing school in the United States.

    The modern pencil was invented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte, a scientist serving in the army of Napoleon Bonaparte. The magic material that was so appropriate for the purpose was the form of pure carbon that we call graphite.

    Hair straighteners have become popular in the early 1960's and have been in use ever since. In 1872, Erica Feldman used the first ironing device to style her hair. She used heated iron rods and was inspired by a curling iron (heated rod with metallic teeth), invented at the same time by Parisian man Marcel Grateau.

    The first automobile (1885–1886) The first stationary gasoline engine developed by Carl Benz was a one-cylinder two-stroke unit which ran for the first time on New Year's Eve 1879.

    The first patent on a ballpoint pen was issued on October 30, 1888, to John J Loud. In 1938, László Bíró, a Hungarian newspaper editor, with the help of his brother George, a chemist, began to design new types of pens, including one with a tiny ball in its tip that was free to turn in a socket.

    On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made four brief flights at Kitty Hawk with their first powered aircraft. The Wright brothers had invented the first successful airplane.

    American engineer Percy Spencer is generally credited with inventing the modern microwave oven after World War II from radar technology developed during the war. Named the "Radarange", it was first sold in 1946.

    In 1986 Rommy Revson patented the scrunchie. It was a vast improvement from the elastic rubber bands that would get stuck or tangled. These hair ties were also cute, coming in an array of colors and patterns. This dismissed the idea of it being "un-ladylike."

    The Scrunchie was invented by Philips E. Meyers in 1963 but was not patented until 1987 by Ronny Revson, who named the decorative hair accessory the Scunci after her pet toy poodle. The name Scrunchie was a natural evolution, because the fabric scrunched up.
