    The Institute was opened for black students who wanted to become teachers by Booker T. Washington in Tuskegee, Alabama.

  • Sioux chief Sitting Bull surrenders

    The surrender took place in Fort Buford, Montana.

  • Grover Cleveland becomes President

    Cleveland defeated the Republican candidate James G. Blaine.

  • Ellis Island opens

    Ellis Island opens in the New York Harbor.

  • Treaty of Paris signed

    This treaty officially ended the Spanish-American War.

  • The Open Door Policy is declared

    This policy was declared by John Hay, the Secretary of State, opening international markets.
