Technology Invented in the 2010s

  • Instagram

    Instagram
The popular photo and video-sharing social media app was founded by Kevin Systrom and started as a prototype named Burbn. The app first launched in 2010 to the app store and gained popularity quickly with 25,000 users in just one day. While it has changed over the years, it's popularity has yet to fail, even creating new career paths such as brand influencers.
  • Vine

    Vine
Before TikTok, there was Vine, the first social media app to bring short-form videos to the mainstream. While it was short-lived it changed the way people created viral content and forced you to be creative and concise as the video clips were limited to 6 seconds. Vine was founded by Dom Hofmann, Rus Yusupov, and Colin Kroll in June 2012 but was acquired and launched by Twitter just a few months later in 2013 before it ultimately shut down in 2017.
  • Ring Doorbell

    Ring Doorbell
Originally founded as Doorbot in late 2013 by Jamie Siminoff, Ring was actually declined on an episode of Shark Tank with Siminoff estimating it's worth at around $7 million. However, in 2018, Ring was purchased by Amazon for over $1 billion. Ring changed home security systems and doorbells all at the same time by allowing video to notify you on your smart phone and giving control to the users.
  • Apple Watch

    Apple Watch
Smartwatches and other wearable technology gained popularity in the 2010s, most notably, the Apple Watch. Apple's previous head designer, Jony Ive, began working on the Apple Watch around 2011, with the original release happening just years later. The Apple Watch has changed the way we use our watches, it has become an extension of our smartphones, a fitness tracker, and a safety device.
  • Nintendo Switch

    Nintendo Switch
While this isn't the first time we saw a portable gaming console, the Nintendo Switch was the first hybrid gaming model on the market. Not only can the Switch be played on the TV at home but it can be taken on the go as a portable gaming console great for traveling or events without losing your place in the game. Yoshiaki Koizumi was the head of the development team who created and conceptualized the hardware and design of the Nintendo Switch that we know and love today.
